THE UNDER THE CYPRESS STORY:

Drawing on the heritage of the 103-year-old buildings, the visual experience of the restaurant is as much a draw card as the food. The restaurant is housed in the Annex (Annexure) of an historic building previously known as the Majestic Hotel. The hotel was designed in 1916 and was complete by the mid-1920s. In the early 21st century it was re-developed into The Majestic Village, a sectional title Residential complex. The old Majestic hotel was a sister hotel to the well-known Mount Nelson Hotel still situated in Cape Town central. On extremely hot days in the time before the advent of air conditioning patrons of The Mount Nelson would be relocated by the train to the majestic for their comfort.

The Annex Building originally known as “Die Klipkantientjie” was built in 1913, this building served as the saloon and public bar. The external facade has ever so slightly changed since its original design in 1913. Under The Cypress is a graceful and peaceful escape from the bustle of Main Road.

The Annex restaurant opened their doors in 2010, and underwent a few changes to the brand, menu and offering and has been lighting up Kalk Bay with its harbour views from Under The Cypress and great new food.

The UTC Main dining area, with its cosy fireplace, is perfect for indoor dining. Guests can also enjoy relaxed meals on The Veranda, at a table in The Courtyard under our trademark cypress tree, and enjoy the fantastic harbour view from Under The Cypress with one of our famous craft beers of course...
